Historic Trails

Well marked walking trail and a new lodgeDescription: This is an invigorating self cater, well marked walking trail and a new lodge with quality at affordable prices. We provide great scenery of rare native birds in their natural native forest environment (Blue Ducks, Weka, Kaka on the trails and Kiwi can be heard from the lodge’s deck at night and found with a torch.)

Our well marked and well graded trails are truly historic, some dating back to over 100 years old.

Because we are a central lodge with trails branching out from it, you don’t need to pack your gear every morning, just spread out and treat the place like home for the duration of your stay. We keep to single groups, three minimum.

Day 1: A short walk in two parts. Approximately 6.5kms through historic military trails, native forests and healthy regenerating undergrowth. You will also see across the Raukumara Range from the tops on a clear day. There is a 2km extra option up to The Forks and back, where you can see picturesque pines and shingle riverbed, one of the managers favourite strolls.

Day 2: 13kms along old logging roads above the Whitikau Stream, through tiny creeks and up a beautiful little gorge. Farmland, native bush, pines and Eucalyptus.

Day 3: 9kms along a fairly flat part of the military track to begin with, you will see where the pioneers and soldiers carved tracks into solid rock using only basic tools and rudimentary explosives. You will see a really nice section of the river today with interesting rock formations and native forest to rivers edge in places. You will travel up to the pine/native tops and then down an old planters track, across the stream and back to the lodge and a good nights rest.

Location: 90 minutes East of Whakatane
Prices: $150 per person for 3 day, 3 night adventure.

You will see a really nice section of the river
