Dart Stables

Horse riding with Dart Stables in OtagoDescription: Dart Stables has been operating since 1992 and has built a reputation for successfully catering for all riding abilities, from complete beginner to lifetime rider. Based in Glenorchy Dart Stables ride at the Head of Lake Wakatipu, across the Rees and Dart Rivers, through Paradise and up to Mount Aspiring National Park. This stunning part of the country has recently come to fame as its beauty was captured in the epic movie ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

The scenery in and around Glenorchy is spectacular – snow-capped mountains, lakes and crystal clear turquoise waters. We have a variety of horses to suit all level of rider and our experienced, knowledgeable team will match clients with a suitable mount, offering the opportunity for beginners to learn and the experienced to ride to their own capability.

Our rides include:

  • The River Wild: A beautiful 2 hour ride at the Head of Lake Wakatipu, suitable for all ages, riding abilities and fitness
  • The Ride of the Rings: Probably the most scenic horse ride in the world, and a must for The Lord of the Rings’ fans
  • The River & Rings ride ** NEW **: Combines "The River Wild" and "The Ride of the Rings" in one day, with time in between to enjoy Glenorchy`s tranquil township. Two great rides in one day!
  • An Overnight in Paradise: A typical Overnight takes you to Paradise, a 5-6 hour ride. Staying in Paradise’s tranquil beech forest you will have the opportunity to explore or just relax taking in the surrounding beauty. Day 2 you make your way back to the Stables along the Dart Valley, another 5-6 hour ride. All-in-all an unforgettable experience.
  • The Trilogy Loop: Follow the trail of Saruman’s army as they departed Isengard on this epic 3 - 3.5 hour ride. With breathtaking views of The Misty Mountains, Wizards Vale and the Mighty Methedras, the Trilogy Loop encompasses both the Rees and Dart River Valleys. There are several river crossings and magnificent views towards the head of Lake Wakatipu with plenty of opportunities for some faster paced riding. Riding experience is required - not suitable for beginners.

Glenmac Farmstay Horse TrekkingDescription: Small personalised and friendly rides over farmland and tussock country. Wonderful views ranging from the mountain to the sea. Rides vary in length to suit you.

We accommodate riders of all abilities and experience. Beginner and novice riders can be confident in the knowledge they will be riding a quiet, reliable horse within a small, personalised tour group with an experienced trekking guide. N.Z.Q.A. lessons and riding instruction for all levels.

Students can be credited with NZQA Units leading to a National Certificate in Equine Introductory Level 2.

Students may also be accredited A.T.T.T.O National Certificate in Adventure Tourism with strands in Horse Trek Guiding, leading to a career in this area.
